Cancún: Insider tips from JetBlue Vacations’ Helpful Humans

We know the best travel tips come from those who’ve actually been there. That’s why we turned to our Helpful Humans — the JetBlue Vacations team who live and breathe travel — to share their firsthand insights from Cancún. This is the ultimate insider’s guide, packed with real recommendations from people who know travel best.

Q: What are the must-do entertainment and nightlife spots?

A: You absolutely must experience the CHIC Cabaret show at the Grand at TRS Yucatan! It's an unforgettable adults-only dinner experience with alcohol pairing. The pre-show starts at 7:30 pm just outside the theater. For a fun, unique cocktail spot, check out the SLS Monkey Bar at the brand new SLS Playa Mujeres—it overlooks the ocean and is decorated with playful monkey-themed art!

Q: Where can we find the best food - from quick bites to fine dining?

A: You have to eat at Dreams Natura—the seafood and Pan-Asian restaurants were trip highlights! At TRS Coral, you should definitely try the delicious Hibachi Dinner at Sumptory or grab a rooftop lunch (the grilled chicken and mashed potatoes are a crew favorite!). For an authentic taste of Mexico, the Tacos al Pastor at the Iberostar Paraiso Lindo buffet are considered the most authentic around. Do not miss the Friday Night BBQ dinner buffet at the Lindo and Coral Level for steak, lamb, and jumbo shrimp!

Q: What are the best activities for family fun and water adventures?

A: The Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun is a must-do! The water park is incredible, with 14 slides open from 9am to 5pm. The resort also has an amazing game center with bowling and arcade games for family time. At the Iberostar complex, you can spend the day enjoying the on-site water park, wave pool, and lazy river. As a guest of Xcaret Hotels, you get full access to their parks (and the waterparks at Royalton Splash are amazing for all ages!).

Q: Where are the best pools, beaches, and relaxation spots?

A: The TRS Coral Sky Bar offers breathtaking ocean views that are worth a visit alone - it's a perfect place to relax with a drink. The impressive infinity pool at TRS Yucatan is a must-see. For a unique spa experience, the Dreams Natura Spa is an actual cave with mood lighting and is absolutely gorgeous! For a very private feel, check out the Hyatt Vivid’s Beach Club @ Ennea beach or the beachfront pool at the TRS Yucatan.

Q: What about unique hotel features, luxury upgrades, and services?

A: If you’re traveling with kids, consider hotels that offer a "family selection" private pool and beach area - it's worth the upgrade for a more relaxed experience. For luxury, the TRS Coral and TRS Yucatan are praised for their upscale atmosphere and stunning views. At the Iberostar Coral Level, every room has a full ocean-view balcony. You can also get a taste of culture with a match at the Rafael Nadal Tennis Courts.

Q: Are there any convenient services or special travel tips we should know?

A: Yes! The Xcaret Hotel’s All-Fun Inclusive offers ferry tickets and round-trip transportation to Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. If you stay at the Iberostar complex, the "centro comercial" connects the properties and features shops, an ice cream parlor, and a nightclub. Don't forget the best tip: an early morning walk to catch the sunrise over the water is a beautiful and peaceful way to start your day!

Entry requirements

U.S. citizens visiting Cancún must have a valid passport, however, no visa is required for stays of up to 180 days. Before traveling, you will need to complete the free Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM), commonly known as a tourist card, which can be done conveniently online or upon arrival at the airport.

Non-U.S. citizens should verify entry requirements based on their nationality. Depending on your citizenship, a Mexican visa might be required in addition to a valid passport.

There are no departure taxes or fees beyond what is typically included in your airline ticket.

Currency and money

Cancún’s official currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN), and although U.S. dollars (USD) are widely accepted in most tourist areas, paying in pesos often provides better value. Major credit cards like Visa and Mastercard are commonly accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops, especially in Cancún’s Hotel Zone. American Express is accepted at many upscale establishments, though not as universally as Visa and Mastercard.

ATMs are readily available in tourist zones, shopping malls, hotels, and throughout downtown Cancún. Machines operated by major Mexican banks such as Banamex, HSBC, Banorte, and Santander typically offer reliable service, although transaction fees may apply for foreign cardholders.

Tipping in Cancún generally aligns with U.S. customs, with slight variations:

  • Restaurants: 10-15% of the bill; higher-end establishments typically expect closer to 15-20%
  • Bartenders: Approximately $1 (USD) or 20 MXN per drink
  • Hotel housekeeping: 40-100 MXN (about $2-5 USD) per day
  • Tour guides: 10-20% of tour price, depending on service quality
  • Taxi drivers: Tipping is not mandatory, but rounding up fares or tipping 10% is appreciated

Language and communication

Spanish is the official and most widely spoken language in Cancún. English is also widely spoken and understood in hotels, resorts, tourist attractions, and restaurants, particularly in the Hotel Zone. However, in downtown Cancún or when exploring beyond the main tourist areas, Spanish is more prevalent, though locals often know basic English phrases.

Residents of Cancún greatly appreciate visitors who make an effort to speak a little Spanish, even if not perfectly pronounced. Common useful phrases include:

Basic courtesy

  • "Hola" (oh-lah) – Hello
  • "Gracias" (grah-see-ahs) – Thank you
  • "Por favor" (por fah-vor) – Please
  • "¿Dónde está...?" (don-deh es-tah) – Where is...?
  • "¿Cuánto cuesta?" (kwan-toh kwes-tah) – How much does it cost?

Hotel & accommodation

  • “Tengo una reservación.” (ten-goh oo-nah reh-sehr-vah-syohn) – I have a reservation.
“¿A qué hora es el check-out?” (ah keh oh-rah es el chek-owt) – What time is check-out?

Emergencies & help

  • “Necesito ayuda.” (neh-seh-see-toh ah-yoo-dah) – I need help.

Technology resources

Cancún offers modern technological infrastructure with a few considerations for international visitors:

Power & outlets:

  • Mexico uses the same electrical standards as the U.S. (120V, 60Hz).
  • Standard U.S. plugs (Types A and B) work without adapters.

Cellphones & mobile service:

  • Major U.S. carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) typically offer roaming plans for Mexico, though fees or daily charges may apply. Be sure to check with your mobile provider before your trip to avoid unexpected charges.
  • Local SIM cards or prepaid plans are widely available and affordable if your stay is extended.
  • Coverage is strong in Cancún's Hotel Zone, downtown areas, and most tourist attractions, but service can be limited in remote cenotes or jungle areas.

Wi-fi accessibility:

  • Complimentary Wi-Fi is standard in hotels, resorts, restaurants, cafes, and shopping malls.
  • Public Wi-Fi hotspots are available in some busy areas of the Hotel Zone and downtown Cancún, though reliability can vary. For security, avoid entering personal information and use a VPN when possible.
  • Consider downloading offline maps, translation apps, and essential travel information prior to arrival.

Useful apps:

  • Uber is available and often more affordable than traditional taxis. Service may be limited due to local regulations, so check the app for current availability.
  • Google Translate is essential for quickly navigating language barriers.
  • WhatsApp is widely used locally for communication and bookings.
  • Local weather apps help monitor tropical conditions, particularly during hurricane season.

Health & safety

Cancún is generally safe for visitors, especially in well-populated tourist areas like the Hotel Zone and downtown. However, as with any travel destination, standard precautions are recommended:
• Stay aware of your surroundings, especially at night.
• Avoid displaying expensive jewelry or cash.
• Use authorized taxis or rideshare services.
• Keep valuables secured in hotel safes.
• Avoid isolated areas, particularly after dark.

Sun protection

Sun protection is crucial year-round in Cancún due to intense tropical sunlight. Regularly apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), wear sunglasses and a hat, and stay hydrated, especially during the hottest hours of the day.

Drinking water safety

Tap water in Cancún is not recommended for drinking, even at major hotels and resorts. Bottled water is inexpensive, widely available, and strongly advised to avoid stomach issues.

Medical facilities

Medical facilities in Cancún are modern and equipped to handle common traveler emergencies. Most resorts and hotels can recommend reputable medical centers nearby. Please note that 911 is used in Cancún but response times may vary. Travel insurance with emergency assistance is recommended. Ensure your travel insurance or health insurance provides coverage for medical care in Mexico.
